Control of western flower thrips on harvested strawberries with acetaldehyde in air, 50 per cent carbon dioxide or 1 per cent oxygen
Acetaldehyde (Aa), a volatile compound produced naturally in small quantities by fruits and other plant organs, was found to be toxic to Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on strawberries. Fumigation of field-infested strawberries with 2.0 per cent Aa for 4 h at 21 degrees C caused 100 per cent mortality in thrips and drying of the calyx. Fumigation with Aa in atmospheres that contained 50 per cent C02 or 1.0 per cent 02 eliminated this injury to the calyx. Fumigation with Aa at concentrations as low as 1.5 per cent in combination with 1.0 per cent 02 caused 100 per cent kill. Concentrations of 1.5 or 2.0 per cent Aa also reduced decay of the strawberries by more than 50 per cent. Thus, Aa has potential as a fumigant for postharvest control of the western flower thrips on strawberries shipped to Japan and other foreign countries with strict quarantines against this insect
