Intensive treatment to eradicate Hemileia vastatrix is confined to c. 6000 ha. Leaf sprays are applied with a contact herbicide (Paraquat) mixed with a copper fungicide and adjuvants. The plant is then cut at 40-50 cm from the ground and the remains sprayed. This is supplemented by intensive spraying with pyracarbolid + a copper compound at 25-day intervals. Elsewhere copper fungicides alone are used, with strict quarantine control. As a result of the measures only isolated cases are now reported
