Updating of the economic evaluation of the control campaigns against bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, foot-and-mouth disease and swine fever in Italy :

This is the 1979 updating of the report on the evaluation of the costs and benefits of the control campaigns against Bovine Tuberculosis (TBC), Bovine Brucellosis (BB), Ovicaprine Brucellosis (OCB), Foot-and-Mouth (FMD) and Swine Fever (SF) in Italy, presented at the 48th General Session of the O.I.E. Committee. The evaluation of costs, losses and benefits as well as the cost-benefit analysis were based on the same criteria described in the previous report. The costs (specific allocations by Governmental agencies as well as costs born by farmers) in 1979 for the above control campaigns were 20.3 billion Italian lire (Lit.), namely: 8.436 million Lit. for TBC; 3.550 for BB; 724 for OCB; 5,316 for FMD; and 2.233 for SF. The losses (experienced by farmers) due to the above diseases in 1979 were estimated to be 38.4 billion Lit; namely: 10.000 million Lit. for TBC; 22.800 for BB; 5;600 for OCB; 23 for FMD; and 8 for SF. Net benefits from the control campaigns, calculated for the period 1965/68-1979, were (at 1979 compound values) 1,265.6 billion Lit., namely: 359.6 for TBC; 195.3 for BB; 11.1 for OCB; 646.1 for FMD; and 53.5 for SF. Some considerations are presented on the economic evaluation of the control campaigns and on the epidemiological situation observed in 1979
