Attempts to develop antiviral agents for use in plant disease control
Attempts to control plant virus diseases by chemotherapy have been made for about 60 years. Most of the physiologically active substances showed more or less antiviral activities. They include various inorganic and organic salts, various antimetabolites, antibiotics, dyes, plant saps etc. However, there are only two substances, sodium alginate and skim milk used practically. The known antiviral substances may be classified into two groups, according to their mode of action: virus multiplication inhibitors and virus infection inhibitors. The former includes most of the antimetabolites, antibiotics and some dyes. The latter includes many peptides, phenolic compounds, polysaccharides from higher plants, animals, alga and microorganisms. Recently, attempts have mainly carried out by using some virus infection inhibitors. However, some interesting trials have been made by using special kinds of viruses
