Behavior of pesticides applied to rice seedlings and paddy water

Disulfoton, cartap, propaphos, and arprocarb granules have been used for controlling the green rice leafhopper, Nephotettix cincticeps, and the rice leaf beetle, Oulema oryzae, which are both active in the early stage of rice growth. When the granules were applied to seedling box before transplanting rice, relationship between disappearance of these toxicants in rice plant and IC50 values to the insect pests were traced and speculated with respect to the effective periods. On the other hand, in the middle to later growth stages, many pesticide granules, e.g., diazinon, cartap, carbaryl, MIPC, isoprothiolane, have been used for the control of the brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, leaf roller, Cnaphalocrosis medinalis, and the rice blast disease, Pyricularia oryzae, in paddy water application. The author also discusses the absorption and translocation of pesticides into the rice plant in relation to the application methods
