Cacao hybrid varieties x clonal varieties: a case study in Rondonia

This paper aims to show the results obtained by a small holder who compared the perforemance of cacao hybrid varieties with clonal varieties as an attempt to bring modernization to cacao agrobussines. The study was made in the municipality of Ouro Preto, Rondonia, on hybrid varieties planted in 1982 and on clonal varieties grafted in 2002. Data collected from 2005 to 2008 showed a productivity of aproximately 1,000 Kg ha- year -of dried beans on both varieties provided that weed control, phytosanitary prunning and fruit borers control were aplied. The use of these cultural practices eliminates the need of cooper sprays and reduces pod losses to pers than 10%. Phytosanitary pruning was easier to comply on clonal varities due smaller size of the plants. Selection of more productive clones led clonal varieties productivity to match hybrid variety productivity.
