Caracterización preliminar de 51 accesiones de ayote (Cucurbita moschata) de la colección del CATIE
The objetive of this research was to make a preliminary characterization of 51 accesions of squash (C. moschata) from the CATIE's germplasm collection in order to obtain basic information for the selection of superior genotypes. Five plants per accesion were evaluated using the Esquinas-Alcazar and Gulick descriptor list, hand pollination in order to avoid open pollination in this alogame species. The characterization was made when the 50 percent of the plants were flowered, ripe fruits were harvested and storage in a dry room in order to seeds get a physiological maturity. In that moment fruits and seeds were evaluated. Take were a identity 114 plants with different characteristics from than original accesion so that the seed obtained from this plant were keept aisolated and receive a specific denomination. Fifty three characteristics were evaluated, weight and length of the fruit were those with the highest variation coefficient, 59.4 percent and 49 percent respectively. The traits with less variation were length, width and thickness of the seed (8.4 percent, 9.7 percent and 12.1 percent respectively).
