Hymenoptera and biodiversity

An introduction to the importance of Hymenoptera to biodiversity is given. An overview of the taxonomy and general biology of hymenopterans is followed by a discussion of diversity at the gene, species and ecosystem levels. The impact of formicids, bees and parasitic Hymenoptera on the diversity of other organisms is outlined, with reference to key species, predators and parasitoids, mutualists, resource species and dominants. The occurrence of extinction in the Hymenoptera and consequences of differential extinction of Hymenoptera are also discussed.
