"Caripe y la cueva del Guácharo" por el Dr. Alfred Charffenorth, 1890
En 1890 el geólogo alemán Dr. Alfred Scharffenorth realiza exploraciones en el Oriente venezolano y llega a recorrer el valle de Caripe y explorar la afamada Cueva del Guácharo, ampliamente popularizada en los escritos de Alejandro de Humboldt. Más allá del normal recorrido turístico de esta cavidad, existe el llamado “Paso de Scharffenorth”. Ahora, con la traducción de sus cartas de viaje publicadas en un periódico de Berlín, se conocen los detalles de su exploración que con certeza llegó hasta el “Paso del Viento”, lugar que delimita la “parte turística” de la “no turística” de la Cueva. Adicionalmente se revela que Don Ezequiel Gómez propietario de las tierras donde se ubica la cueva, también era un gran conocedor de la misma y, tal vez ya ocho años antes, había llegado hasta el mismo lugar descrito por Scharffenorth.ABSTRACT:In 1890 the German geologist Dr. Alfred Scharffenorth carries out explorations in Eastern Venezuela, he reaches the valley of Caripe and explores the famous Guácharo Cave, widely popularized in the writings of Alexander von Humboldt. Beyond the normal tourist trip of this cave there is a pass called “Scharffenorth Pass”. With the translation of his travel letters published in a Berlin newspaper we now know the details of this exploration that with certainty reached the “Wind Pass” which is a landmark that divides the “Tourist section” from the larger “Non Tourist section” of the Cave. Additionally he reveals that Don Ezequiel Gómez owner of the lands in which the Cave is located was a good explorer and perhaps eight years earlier could have reached the same places described by Scharffenorth.
