Pospartum Anestrus in Dairy Cows: Hormonal Treatments. A Review

Reducing calving interval means increasing income per cow per year thus justifying intervention techniques to shorten prolonged postpartum anestrus through the use of different hormonal protocols. The induction of estrus refers when anestrous animals are treated with finality to correct this situation. In dairy systems treatments are based on hormones which mimic the events of a nonnal estrus cycle. Anestrus cows always require the use of progesterone to stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary system. After this. combinations of hormones to reach ovulation (GnRH, Estradiol, prostaglandins, eCG) can be used. In this review we discussed different hormonal treatments for the extended postpartum anestrous.
