Nasal conidiobolomycosis in a sheep (Ovis aries) in Uruguay
Conidiobolomycosis is a disease caused by Conidiobolus spp. that affects several animal species including sheep, llamas, deer, horses, dogs and humans. In sheep it is characterized by granulomatous lesions affecting the nasal cavity. Although conidiobolomycosis is endemic in different regions of Brazil, the condition has not been reported in Uruguay. The aims of this study are to describe a case of nasal conidiobolomycosis in a sheep in Uruguay, and to provide a short literature review. The case occurred in March 2015 in a 19-month-old ewe in the department of Colonia. The main clinical signs were nasal discharge, weakness, obtundation, circling and unilateral exophthalmos. The main pathologic findings were locally extensive granulomatous and necrotizing rhinosinusitis in the posterior aspect of the nasal cavity, with displacement of the nasal septum and necrotizing osteochondritis/ osteitis of the nasal septum and frontal bone, with extension into the subcutaneous tissue and right retro-ocular space. Microscopically, there were intralesional hyphae, identified as Conidiobolus spp. by immunohistochemistry, surrounded by Splendore-Hoeppli material. We conclude that conidiobolomycosis occurs sporadically in Uruguay and should be considered in the differential diagnoses for rhinitis in sheep in this country.
