COMPOSITION OF THE CANOPY ARTHROPODS COMMUNITY IN A TROPICAL LOWLAND FOREST IN PANAMA.

The composition of arthropod community associated with 9 species of trees in thecanopy of Parque Natural Metropolitano in Panama was studied. During 60 weeksarthropods were sampled using modified Malaise traps. The canopy was reachedusing a construction crane established in the park. A total of 37 225 individualsbelonging to 162 families were collected. The results indicate that the order Dipterais best represented. The most abundant families were Cecidomyiidae, Chironomidae,Psychodidae, Mycetophilidae, Ceratopogonidae, Agaonidae, Torymidae, Formicidaeand Cicadellidae. The species of Enterolobium cyclocarpum and Anacardiumexcelsum were the ones with higher association of arthropods, both in number offamilies and individual. The analysis indicates that there is a dependency betweenthe families of arthropods and tree species. Cecidomyiidae family with gall-inducehabit was more abundant taxon.
