DESCRIPTION OF THE MALE GENITALIA OF FOURTEEN SPECIES OF CAMAROTUS GERMAR (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE)
This work describes the male genitalia of fourteen species of the genus Camarotus Germar, 1833 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): Group pusillus (C. costaricensis, C. carinatus, C. infuscatus and C. werneri), Group attelaboides (C. crenulatus, C. ferrugineus, C. attelaboides, C. rhinion, C. ohausi and C. angustifrons) and the cassidoides group (C. granada, C. coccinelloides, C. fusiger and C. carrapatus). Samples collected in Panama and other Neotropic countries were reviewed. The male genitalia were then removed, boiled in potassium hydroxide solution (KOH) at 10% to disintegrate the fat and the soft tissues for 10 minutes. Direct observations were made in the stereoscope, in addition to taking photographs using a scanning electron microscope, confocal microscope, and autofluorescence. According to the results, Camarotus aedeagus is a ringed-shaped type and presents valid characters as diagnostic elements for each species. Among the observed characteristics of male genitalia, perforations and granules, shape of aedeagus apex and ostium, curvature of the penis and the presence of strong setae are relevant to define the species treated in this study.
