Fluid therapy in bovine cattle

Many diseases of both calves and adult cattle are characterized by dehydration, severe disturbances of the acid-base state, electrolyte imbalances as well as biochemical changes, being the fluid therapy a valuable tool for correction of these imbalances. However, it is essential to correct the underlying problem as quick as possible. Taking into count that the access to the laboratory ancillary tests is restricted in the field, the Veterinary Medic will have to define if possible, through an accurate history and complete clinic examination, if the patient has a true acid-base disturbance and/or deficit in corporal water, or if there is an electrolytes lack, in order to select the route of administration, solution type and volume of liquids to administer, which will be useful to all professionals of bovine internal medicine.
