¿Ucrania dividida?
This article analyses the historical construction of the Ukranian nation, as well as the processes that, according to the author, structure today's "divided Ukraine". The conversion to Christianity, the Mongol invasions and the presence of Russia as an inmediate neighbor determine to a great extent Ukranians' cultural and religious identity, which is not uniform. However, it is until Ukraine's integration to the USSR that the divisions within this country start to show intensively, due to the emergence of two tendencies maintained nowadays: anti-Russian and pro-Russian. Counting on great amounts of energetic resources in its territory, such as nuclear energy and hydrocarbons, the strategic importance of Ukraine increased significantly during the Cold War and, when it obtainedits independence from the USSR, it became an important piece of the world's chessboard. For this, the internal political struggle has been several parties disputing political power and the control of the energetic production, dragging society in general to a fragmentation which obeys to the post-Cold War dichotomy in the former socialist countries. Pro-Russia or Pro-West?
