Mato Grosso state agribusiness: an input-output analysis
The objective of this work was to estimate the agribusiness of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, for its productive structure, and its importance for both for the state and the Brazilian economy. Agribusiness represents a strategic sector, and it can be presently considered the great performance conditioning of the Brazilian economy. Mato Grosso state (MT) outstands as an important agricultural belt of the country. Ideal climate conditions for agriculture activities are natural in the state. These factors, when associated to the modernization of agricultural practices, technological innovation, and the policies for sector, provide high levels of yield and productivity. Using an interregional input-output model, we estimated the relative importance of the main activities of the state’s agribusiness in the regional and national contexts. The sectors directly related to agribusiness account for 27.6% of the state’s added value. However, its importance increases to 34.8%, when we consider the buying and selling relationships that the agribusiness sector maintains with other sectors of the state and national economy. We also present indicators of the complexity of the state’s economy, such as linkage indices and product multipliers, added value, and employment. The main results suggest that various activities directly related to agribusiness outstand in relative importance, withing the productive structure of Mato Grosso state, for all economic indicators estimated from the MIP. The results related to the multipliers show that various activities related to agribusiness perform an important role in the state´s economy for their capacity of increasing production and generating employment and added value.
