Perspectives for ethanol exports in Brazil

Brazilian ethanol exports may benefit from the growing search for a low-carbon economy and from adjustments in the balance between the national supply and demand for this biofuel. Since 2012, the country’s production of biofuel has been increasing, and peaked at 35.3 billion liters in 2019. Biofuel sales grew from 9.8 billion liters in 2012 to 16.8 billion liters in 2021. This article gives an outlook for ethanol exports through to 2031, built from a study by Empresa de Pesquisa Energética and from some information on the production of total recoverable sugars (ATR) in the country. The research method was based on predictive adaptations for different scenarios of supply and demand by this biofuel. The results indicate that there is potential for exports to grow until 2031; however, there is also the need to boost the country’s production capacity, in order to facilitate the national energetic transition.
