Dendroenergetic characterization of wood and charcoal from different genetic materials of the genus Eucalyptus

In a context of climate change and increased energy demand, biomass, particularly firewood and charcoal, becomes a valuable alternative for the substitution of fossil fuels, with a better balance of gaseous emissions and great potential in our country. In particular, the Eucalyptus genus might be very relevant in this process, since it constitutes the second forestry genus at the national level, with the northeast of Entre Ríos being one of its largest production centers. A correct characterization of the materials available in our country, and in this area in particular, will contribute to their valorization for various purposes, among which dendroenergy stands out. The objective of this work was to characterize and compare various dendroenergetic properties of stem wood and charcoal from different materials of the Eucalyptus genus, including species, hybrids and clones of 7 years old. Regarding wood, the tested materials were located within the range of light and medium-heavy woods, whose analyzed characteristics (ash content, calorific value and charcoal yield) presented orders of magnitude similar to those reported by works referring to this botanical genus. Regarding charcoal, contrasting results were found depending on the considered variable (apparent relative density, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon and calorific value). Based on this, further research is needed, using different protocols, in order to corroborate the values obtained for these characteristics, which are of great importance to establish the dendroenergetic potential for domestic and industrial use.
