Observed changes in the rainfall regime in the Argentinean Patagonia

Argentinean Patagonia is a vast and complex region which is mainly characterized by its dry and arid climate. Lately, it has been affected by droughts more frequently, jeopardizing their main economic activities. Therefore, water is an invaluable resource. The main objective of this work is to study the changes of the precipitation regime and the existing trends. With this objective in mind a climatology was elaborated from the 1961-2020 period. The monthly frequency distribution was fitted to a Gamma distribution. Even further, a statistical analysis was made studying the trends and the characterized cycles. Negative trends were found to be more intense in the West region near the Cordillera. Although in the south positive trends were found. Even more, oscillations around a three-year period were found in the west region and a 30-year cycle was found in the south region.
