Beneficial use of biosolids as organic fertilizers in arid and semiarid rangelands

Biosolids generation data in Mexico and other countries as well as actual trends of biosolids use and disposition are presented. Biosolids types and the biosolids alternatives for use and disposition are described. Data about biosolids composition, including plant nutrients and other elements with toxic potential as well as their variability are shown. Methods of biosolids application and season of application and their effects on arid and semiarid rangelands are analyzed. The effects of topical application of biosolids on some soil physical, chemical and biological properties are presented. The effects of biosolids application on runoff and leachate water in arid and semiarid soils are presented. Effects of biosolids application on forage yield and quality of some grasses are described. Data on behavior and performance of cattle on arid rangelands treated with biosolids are presented. The effects of biosolids application on air quality are described. Limits and management practices for biosolids application in arid and semiarid rangelands are discussed. Also, the advantages and draws of biosolids application on rangelands are described and discussed.
