Frequency of aujeszkys disease in farrow to finish pig farms of the central area of Mexico

Castro GDA, Diosdado VF, Rosales OC, León CA, Morilla GA. Téc Pecu Méx 2000;38(2)81-88. In Mexico, there is a control and erradication campaign of the Aujeszky's disease (AD). In order to obtain an approximate estimate of the epidemiological situation of AD during 1996 to 1997, a serological survey for convenience was done with 30 pigs, four to six months of age and 30 sows, from 260 pig farrow-to-finish farms of the central area of Mexico. The AD viral antibodies were determined by competitive ELISA gE or scrutiny test. The results showed that in 39.2% of the farms, the animals were free of AD antibodies and in 60.7% of them AD infected swine were detected. The frequency of positive sows to AD virus in the farms was classified by ranges. In 12.7% (20/158) of the farms, the range of sows with antibodies was from 1 to 20%; in 20.2% (32/ 158), was from 31 to 70 % and in 67.1% (106/158) of the farms, was from 71 to 100%. Besides in 67.7% (107/158) of the farms where sows were infected, pigs four to six months of age had also antibodies. From 189 farms, it was found that 59.8% of the animals were vaccinated and 40.2% were not. It was concluded that in the central area of Mexico, there was a high number of farms with AD virus infected animals and whenever infected sows were present in the farm, pigs four to six months of age became also infected. There was not a significative difference in the frequency of animals with antibodies between farms in which animals were vaccinated with those in which vaccine was not used.
