Annual variation of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) infestation in three dairies of Aguascalientes, México

Cruz-Vázquez C, Martínez RS, Vitela MI, Ramos PM, Quintero MMT, García VZ. Téc Pecu Méx 2000;38(2)135-142. The aim of the work was to study the annual variation of Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) adult stage infestation in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Three dairy farms which maintained Holstein cows in free-pens housing were selected; throught the study the farmers did not apply insecticide treatment. The dairy farms were monitored weekly for one year; every ocassion 10% of the dairy cows were selected making direct counts of adult flies (resting or feeding) on the front of the legs. The infestation had a seasonal behaviour, begining in Spring and finishing in late Fall (eight months approximately). In farm 1, a trimodal trend was observed and in dairies 2 and 3, a bimodal one; the mid Summer-mid Fall period had the higher infestation and it was observed an abundance from 15 to 40 flies per animal in farm 1 and from four to eight flies per animal in dairies 2 and 3; the diapause was present in Winter with a duration of 50 to 60 days approximately.
