Mortality of the horn fly Haematobia Irritans (l.) Caused by the phloxin b dye

Loera GJ, Moreno DS, Waldon M, Méndez RA. Téc Pecu Méx 2000,38(3)211-217. The efficacy of phloxine B against the horn fly Haematobia irritans L. was evaluated. Laboratory reared horn flies were utilized. Treatments were composed by phloxine B added to fresh cow blood in proportions of: 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 ppm, and fresh cow blood alone as a check. Horn flies were maintained in 30x30x30 cm cages, and treatments were applied three times by using cotton sanitary towels positioned at the outside top level of the cages. To retard treatments dessication, cotton sanitary towels were covered with 12 cm in diameter foam dishes. Each treatment was replicated four times. The day after treatments were applied, cages were moved outside of the laboratory to expose horn flies to sunlight from 0700 to 1100. Total numbers of dead horn flies were registered 24 hours after exposed to sunlight, and data were subjected to Probit analysis. Phloxine B, LC50 and LC90 were 1210 and 2042 ppm, respectively. The effectiveness of this dye in the field will be based upon the development of a practical method of application to facilitate its ingestion by the flies.
