Rumen microbes rapidly degrade amino acids in ruminant diets, and in response DL-methionine has been rumen-protected (RPMet) to increase duodenal digestible methionine. Two experiments were conducted to estimate rumen degradability of a commercial rumen-protected methionine (Mepron.M85, Degussa-Hülls). In the first experiment, in situ degradability of RPMet was determined at 12, 18 and 24 h using two cows fitted with rumen cannula. In the second experiment, in vitro degradability of RPMet at 12 and 18 h were replicated for four consecutive incubations using a mixture of rumen liquid from two cannulated cows as inoculum.
