Terminal ileal cannulation and cecectomy in broilers: surgical evaluation

Poultry production requires careful nutritional and sanitary management. For this, the study of acceptability, digestibility and absorption rate shall be priority for maximum yield obtention. In order to evaluate the post-operative adaptation, a plastic T piece cannulae made from 1 mL disposable syringes was implanted in the terminal ileum of eleven broilers (group I), and eleven others were cecectomized. The cannulation procedure, digestive transit, complications incidence and behaviour were evaluated during 30 days. Cecectomized broilers had an excellent evolution, while those submitted to ileal cannulation presented cannulae patency for short time.
