Changes in growth and development of annual cotton under substrate flooding conditions

To verify and quantify the effects of a temporary lack of oxygen in the root system of herbaceous cotton (Gossypium spp.), synthetic hybrid cultivar CNPA Acala 1, producer of extra long fiber and recommended for planting in irrigated areas and in regions of high rainfall, the present research was done under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that production of cotton seed and plant precocity were significantly reduced with increase in flood stress caused by substrate waterlogging. The maximum precocity reduction was registered at the two-true-leaf stage of plants. The same occurred in the number of bolls per plant, which was reduced by 50% in comparison with the check.
