Yield and growth of dry bean as influenced by soil-water tension. II. Growth
Effects of three irrigation treatments on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growth were studied. Treatments consisted of irrigating when soil-water tension reached 125mb, 250mb and 750mb. There was a marked reduction in growth with increasing soil-water tension, even at relatively low values. Loaf area index (L), leaf area duration (D), dry matter production (Wt), crop growth rate (Ct), relative growth rate (Rw) and net assimilation rate (EA) decreased as the irrigation was carried out at higher soil-water tension. The dry matter production decrease was attributed to the decrease in L and EA. As the soil-water tension increased the L maximum value decreased and occurred sooner, due to early loaf senescence. This, in turn, influenced grain yield, which was highly correlated to D.
