Manganese toxicity in an acid soil affecting the soybean-Rhizobium symbiosis

In two greenhouse experiments a soybean growth and nitrogen fixation with Rhizobium japonicum were conducted on a soil high in manganese. The soybean pants showed a high manganese toxicity to the soil. Dilution of the soil with sand increased nitrogen fixation and plant growth 4 to 6 times and the addition of lime 2 to 3 times. Nodule number, weight and size were even more affected by manganese toxicity. Manganese absorption by the plant was found to be dependent on the dilution, soil pH and other uncontrolled factors. Nodulation and nitrogen fixation were more sensitive to manganese toxicity than plant growth. Soybean varieties and strains of Rhizobium varied as to their tolerance to maganese toxicity and absorption of manganese by the plant.
