Screening rice cultivars for higher efficiency of phosphorus absorption

One hundred and fifty-three cultivars of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.) were screened for phosphorus deficiency under field conditions. The test was conducted in two levels of phosphorus: natural level of soil and 100 kg/ha of P2O5 were utilized. Existence of varietal tolerance to phosphorus deficiency was confirmed. Based on parameter of the efficiency use of the added phosphorus fertilizer (α), cultivars were classified into tour groups: Non-responsive efficient (NRE), responsive efficient (RE), responsive inefficient (RIE), and non-responsive inefficient (NIE). The tolerant cultivars to low level of phosphorus in the soil were: Santa Amélia, Carolina, Prata preto, Mato Grosso, Tainan, IET 1444, IAC 21, IPSL 2060, Quatro meses, Japonés, IAC 1131, AUS 8, IAC 47, Jaguari, Santo Antônio, IAC 5032 and IRAT 13. Tolerant cultivars absorbed more phosphorus than inefficient cultivars from soil.
