Effects of Helminthosporium turcicum Pass., on agronomic traits of some maize families

Two S3 maize inbreds, one resistant and the other susceptible to Helminthosporium turcicum, their F1, F2 and both backcrosses were studied in optimal conditions for the pathogen development. The six populations were evaluated for H. turcicum response in a special split-plot design with four replications. Genetic variability in plants for resistance to the pathogen H. turcicum was studied solely on the basis of yield potential of the various germplasms with and without Dithane M-45 (active ingredient Maneb). Ear weight reduction in the six families varied from 24 to 86% depending on both gene frequency for pathogen resistance and yield potencial of a given family. The interaction of those two factors may determine the viability of fungicide treatment. There was also 13% average reduction in ear number per plant as well as a significant increase in stalk breakage in H. turcicum susceptible families.
