Fundamental characteristics of rainfall in Brazil. I. Rio Grande do Sul

The fundamental characteristics of rainfall (intensity, duration and return period) of fourteen locations were related through the adjustment of mathematical equations, aiming at to generate representative precipitation data for each location as well as to intensity its use in soil conservation projects. Each equation, expressing the rainfall intensity as a. function of return period and duration, was adjusted using the multiple linear regression method. To determine the best adjustment, the maximum coefficient of multiple determination was used. The adjustments showed to be in agreement with field data. The F value for the regression were significant at 1% level of probability. The regression coefficients, determined for the adjustments, showed a great variability for the values of rainfall intensity from one location to another, what makes impossible a generalization of only one equation for the entire state.
