Prediction of genetic gain for some rubber tree characters utilizing three different schemes of selections

The objective of the present paper was to estimate the expected genetic gain with selection for some rubber tree (Hevea spp.) characters in three different schemes of selection adopted for this genus, as follows: I. Selection among half-sib families; II. Selection among and within half-sib families; III. Selection among and within half-sib families by utilizing the best ortets within the best families as clones (asexual multiplication). Half-sib progenies from 64 mother trees previously selected in native jungle from "varzea" (seazonal flooded areas) and "terra firme" (unflooded areas) collected near Manicoré city, Amazon State, were the materials utilized. A 8 x 8 simple lattice design was used for the progeny evaluation. Among the characters studied the best expected genetic gain for selection scheme I was rubber yield (36.33%). The expected genetic gain with scheme II for the some character was 5% higher than in the former. It was observed that among the three schemes studied the most viable and efficient was scheme II. However, a large progress can be expected using scheme III, but a limitation of this scheme is that its use is limited to only one cycle of selection. The large progress of this scheme, when compared to scheme II, is due to the additional dominant genetic, variance.
