Uterine involution and ovarian function in the pospartum Canchim cows
Rectal examination and vaginoscopy were utilized to evaluate ovarian activity and uterine involution, at regular intervals, from the 5th to the 40th day postpartum in 160 Canchim (5/8 Charolais – 3/8 Zebu) cows. Total uterine involution was observed in all animals and the least squares mean was equal to 25.40 days. Cow weight at calving (P < 0.05) and parity number (P < 0.01) affected time of uterine involution. The regression coefficient of time of uterine involution on cow weight at calving was 0.015 ± 0.007, indicating that heavier cows involuted later. Time of involution increased from 22.94 days the primiparous to 27.26 days for those with five or more calvings. A proportion of 37.50% of the animals presented smooth ovaries with no evidence of clinical function by the 40th day postpartum. The parturition-first estrus interval was 127.79 days.
