Bean mixtures composition and their stability

The behavior of bean lines (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was studied under several ecological conditions in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. The trials were performed in three stages in order to obtain mixtures with good stability. Ten mistures of F10 lines obtained from 'Costa Rica' x 'L-3-0-50' cross were studied in the first stage. Twenty-five F10 tines from 'Costa Rica x Gordo' and 'Rico-23 x Gordo' crosses were evaluated in the second stage using IPA 74-19 as control. Finally, fifteen mixtures of nine lines studied in prior stages were used in the thirt stage. Out of these nine lines, three were adapted to good conditions, three showed good stability and three were adapted to poor conditions. The results showed that the mixtures holding superior stability were: 1. lines adapted to poor conditions; 2. lines adapted to good conditions blended with those adapted to poor conditions, in equal number; and 3. lines with good stability blended with those adapted to poor conditions, involving the maximum of four lines in this kind of mixture.
