Coffee Berry Borer: Reduce its impact through Integrated Management

Coffee berry borer is a harmful pest of coffee plantations in Colombia, it affects crop productivity, quality, and profitability. Since the arrival of this African insect in the country, Cenicafé has successfully researched and validated an integrated pest management program to keep it under control. The strategies should be focused on coffee their growing that, due to their geographical and altitude location, are more vulnerable to CBB attack. Additionally, weather forecasts allow identifying critical scenarios where pest controls should be established with greater diligence. In these places and moments, the coffee plantation flowering records allow advancing the management practices with an anticipation of eight months; therefore, it is possible to plan actions with enough time to obtain a healthy and abundant harvest. This seminar presents the biological temperature-related aspects of the insect and allow the identification of coffee growing areas that are vulnerable to CBB. An exercise to establish the CBB management plan in the different coffee regions of Colombia is carried out and the concepts of each biological, physical, chemical, and cultural control strategy are clarified.
