Negro Woman and the Postmemory of Slavery in Elizabeth Catlett

In this paper I study the graphic series entitled Negro Woman (1946) by the American-Mexican artist Elizabeth Catlett. It relies on the concept of “postmemory” in relation to the slavery suffered by the artist´s grandparents, as the base to interpret her desire to create consciousness on the double oppression experienced by black women, both in the past and the present moment. Working in the artistic context of the Taller de Gráfica Popular, Catlett introduced in mid-century México the intersectionality of gender and race in a very explicit and forceful way.
