Pollen morphology of Caiophora species (Loasaceae) in Argentina

The pollen morphology of the 17 species of Caiophora (Loasaceae) recorded in Argentina is described and its possible taxonomic value in the delimitation of these entities is considered. Acetolyzed and  non-acetolyzed pollen grains were  observed and measured under light microscopy (LM), while non-acetolyzed grains were used for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The analyzed species present small to medium prolate to prolate spheroidal pollen grains; reticulate exine with interlocking walls at different levels; walls are smooth, microgranulated or microperforated. Under SEM, interspecific  differences are observed with respect to  wall thickness and lumen diameter.
