Note about ecological value of an industrial area in central Mexico

To contribute to reinforcing the idea that sites not  associated with Protected Natural Areas have high  ecological value, we carried out this research  in a river located in the middle of an  industrial park. Over 1.4 km of the Rio Hondo,  there were defined ten sampling plots of 10 x 10  m to evaluate trees and shrubs (height and  diameter at breast height) and ten nested  squares  of 1 x 1 m for herbaceous (we only  recorded the presented species). Each specimen  was taxonomically determined and its abundance  was established (very common, common,  frequent, scarce, rare, very rare). Twenty-three  plant species were recorded, the best represented  family was Poaceae. A total of 105  individuals were counted, with an average height  of 7.3 m; the mean diameter at breast height was  of 29.5 cm. The Río Hondo maintains typical  elements of riparian vegetation, such as Alnus  acuminata and Salix humboldtiana. Although, it is  located in an industrial park and in a highly  impacted area, the Río Hondo maintains a plant  structure of a high ecological value.
