Por una Educación Ambiental Crítica

Much has been written about the critical pedagogy of Paulo Freire (1921-1997) and his theoretical and practical framework that has served as an inspiration to speak about a pedagogy for the Earth, however, a banking model of environmental education model exists, and it has hindered the exploration of the contributions of the field of critical pedagogy in the transformation of social-ecological systems. In this essay, we look at Freire´s central concepts and we highlight their importance in designing and implementing transformative environmental education projects. We will look at Freire´s works in order to value its importance and its potency as a model capable of questioning and going beyond dominant discourses.

Mucho se ha escrito sobre la pedagogía crítica de Paulo Freire (1921-1997) y su propuesta teórica-práctica que inspiró a algunos educadores a hablar de una pedagogía de la Tierra, pero pese a ello, existe un modelo de educación ambiental hegemónico que no ha permitido explorar los aportes de la pedagogía crítica para la transformación socio-ecológica. En el presente documento, se retoman algunos conceptos centrales de la obra de Freire con la finalidad de resaltar su importancia en el diseño y ejecución de proyectos de educación ambiental que conlleven a una transformación real de las formas de explotación y destrucción socio-ecosistémica. Se trata de volver a revisar, la ya clásica obra de Freire y reconocer su vigencia y su importancia como un modelo capaz de cuestionar y ver más allá de los discursos en boga.
