THE ROLE AND SOCIOECONOMIC PROFILE OF WOMEN IN THE CARE OF HORSE IN SUBSISTENCE AGRICULTURE IN COCLESITO, COLÓN

The study examines the role and socioeconomic profile of women in caring for equine welfare in subsistence agriculture in Coclesito, Colón. For the research, 99 family properties were visited and semi-structured surveys were conducted, covering socioeconomic and animal welfare domains. Data was analyzed using statistical measures and T-Tests or Chi-square tests. Results showed that rural women play a crucial role in the care and management of equines in family agriculture in the region. However, they identified gaps in their socioeconomic profile and their knowledge and training in health and animal welfare issues. These barriers can affect the welfare of equines and the quality of life of women. Therefore, the importance of implementing measures and policies that promote a comprehensive approach to animal care and sustainable development in rural communities, considering the essential role of rural women and the Sustainable Development Goals, is highlighted. This would have a positive impact on both equines and the quality of life of people and the regional environment.
