Distribución general y abundancia relativa de guanacos (Lama guanicoe) en diferentes ambientes de Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

General distribution of the guanaco Lama guanicoe in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, and its relative abundance in steppe and forest-steppe ecotone regions were determined through interviews and roadside counts, respectively. Counts were made during two years in November (pre-reproductive phase), April (post-reproductive phase) and August (critical season of food availability). The resutls showed that this species inhabits all habitats of Tierra del Fuego, except the steppe area between San Sebastian Bay and Río Grande, where it was probably displaced by sheep and hunting. Relative abundance was higher in the ecotone than in the steppe. In the steppe, the San Sebastian Bay area had the highest relative abundance of guanacos (total average= 1. 7 guanacos/km of road). In the forest-steppe ecotone, the average abundance was 1.7 guanacos/km. Abundance in August was significantly higher, probably due to seasonal migration of individuals moving down from the mountains due to low temperature.
