Public communication of science based on socio-scientific controversies

Confronted with the great challenges of contemporary societies, sciences are expected to provide explanations and solutions. However, answers are complex and uncertain, and thosewho do science, work in the media or think of public policies require a communication that fits these needs. In a context where scienceis increasingly present in every day life, it is necessary to rethink its communication. Searching for alternatives and tools, this article proposes to approach the public communication of science based on socio-scientific controversies as a strategy to overcome certain simplifying view sofcurrent scientific work. The potential of this approach is shown through several examples. It is concluded that  making the contentious genesis of knowledge production visible can contribute to the construction of a more realistic, close, human, and contextualized image of knowledg eproduction.
