Ultrasonographic and histopathological findings of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) in a dog
Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a chronic condition in which there is formation and proliferation of fibrous connective tissue over the serous layer of the parietal or visceral peritoneum. Its etiology is not well defined, it is believed to be related to chronic irritation of the peritoneum, and the cause may be an external or idiopathic factor. This paper aims to describe the ultrasound findings in a 7-month-old female, mixed-breed, canine patient with a history of progressive abdominal distension. It was subjected to an ultrasonographic study, visualizing irregular trabecular formations that originate in the spleen, peritoneal effusion without correct visualization of the abdominal organs. Exploratory laparotomy was performed with partial removal of the peritoneal membrane, a small portion was sent for histopathological study, resulting in EPS. As a conclusion for the definitive diagnosis of EPS, the surgical procedure with sample collection for histopathology is necessary, and ultrasonography is also a great help for approximating the diagnosis of EPS.
