Digital revolution in the agricultural sector and transformation of innovative dynamics: new actors and relationships

The adoption of innovative technologies has historically offered opportunities to increase productivity, reduce the use of inputs and promote sustainability in the agricultural sector. The topic investigated in this article is the so-called Agriculture 4.0, understood as the development and application of digital technologies to the various links in the agricultural production chains. The objective of this research is to analyze how this movement transforms the innovative dynamics of agriculture, mapping the interested actors and the relationships established for innovation. Considering the emergence of the topic, an exploratory study was chosen, based on secondary data. An overview of the actors, their interests and relationships was established using the agricultural innovation ecosystem approach. Among the movements identified, the following stand out: a greater propensity of rural producers to adopt digital products and services; a movement to reinvent traditional players in the sector, in order to explore the opportunities of this new digital environment; increased collaborations among traditional companies, research institutes and universities, and new actors entering this market, such as information technology companies, telecommunication companies and startups; and the key role of governments in offering infrastructure and incentives for digital innovation and promoting coordination among actors.
