Soil compaction in a free area with urban trees in clayey soils
The objective of this study was to subsidize the management of urban trees for the aspects related to the soils supporting them, through the analysis of the soil compaction in the surroundings of urban trees showing root outcrops, in Dois Vizinhos municipality, in Paraná state, Brazil. The data were collected in six streets, with sampling from the surroundings of 10 trees of different species, which are commonly used as urban trees in cities in the South of Brazil. The parameters for phytosanitary quality of the trees, intensity of outcropping roots, and soil compaction in the tree surroundings were observed; the compaction was measured for resistance to penetration into the soil. The resistance to soil penetration in free areas with root outcrops was high, mainly between the trunk and the curb (> 6000 kPa), but equally classified as high on all sides of the trunk (> 4800 kPa), which suggests highly hindering values for the growth of roots on all sides of the trunk. For a new planting in these places, soil unpacking should be the main focus. Therefore, to improve the surrounding for the growth of a new tree, it is necessary to open large pits, up to 60 cm soil depth, in order to unpack the soil in the most impeding layers to root growth.
