Performance of heifers BON x Zebu in a silvopastoral system of Tithonia diversifolia, in Antioquia, Colombia

The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of a silvopastoral system with Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl A. Gray), Crescentia cujete (L.), and Urochloa -Brachiaria- brizantha cv. Toledo associated with Brachiaria humidícola, on the productive parameters of BON x zebu heifers. 24 heifers BON x Zebu with an average age of 15,81±2,05 months and 183,95±33,45 kg of weight were distributed randomly in two treatments, a monoculture with Urochloa -Brachiaria-brizantha cv. Toledo associated to Brachiaria humidícola, and, the silvopastoral system with Tithonia diversifolia. The dry matter production and the consumption was estimated in each grazing system. Also, the weight, weight gain, body height, heart girth and body length in both treatments. Significant differences were found in the silvopastoral system for the production of dry matter, while for, in consumption, there were no significant differences. Significant differences (p≤0,05) in the silvopastoral system were found too for weight gain, the weight, and body height. In conclusion silvopastoral systems are, an alternative to improve the forage offer and improve the performance of heifers in low tropics lands.
