Commodification of Huamantla county ́s territory, Tlaxcala, Mexico

Tourism in Mexico is a consolidated economic sector. However, the State of Tlaxcala considers it as an “emerging” economic activity. Despite this, the entity offers a wide variety of tourist attractions such as the premier San Francisco Soltepec ́s Hacienda, “Santauario de las Luciérnagas”, the Tuscan-style-town of Val’Quirico, as well as Tlaxco and Huamantla “Pueblos Mágicos”. This article explains the Huamantla county commodification process in order to join to the national tourist market circuit. For this purpose, territorial indicators for 2015 and 2021, related to capital reconversion, agents with greater investment capacity and changes, both in economic activities and in the out-of-town landscape were taken, to contrast them and to demonstrate the speed of that process. The results indicated that, although Huamantla leaned towards a tourist profile because of the designation as “Pueblo Mágico” in 2007, the county consolidated the territory commodification thanks to the economic boost generated by the industrial sector some years later. In this way, the Audi car manufacturer establishment and the industrial parks since 2016 were taken into consideration for the case in study.
