Fossil vertebrates and invertebrates from the Atlantic Coast of Buenos Aires province. Argentina. Age and paleoenvironments

Fossil vertebrates from marine shorelines along the Atlantic coast of Buenos Aires province, Eastern Argentina, are well-known since the 19th century. In spite of being frequent along the coast of the Cabo San Antonio area, the description of fossil vertebrates and invertebrates found along the coast remains almost undocumented and its description has been almost anecdotal. The aim of the present contribution is to describe a large collection of fossils found along the beach of several localities at the cabo de San Antonio Area. The fossils include a mixture of terrestrial and marine animals that in all probability belong to shelf platform beds from the Pozo 10 Formation (ca 120.000 YBP), correlated with the marine transgressive event known as “Belgranense”. Several fossils suggest warm waters, reminiscent of those occurring today in northern Brazil. The fossils here reported are very similar to those of coastal fossiliferous assemblages found in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and southern Buenos Aires province, suggesting some kind of faunistic continuity along the southern coasts during the middle Pleistocene.
