Contribution to the geology of the Cumbres Calchaquíes and Sierra del Aconquija (Tucumán-Catamarca)

The paper presents the results of a recent geological mapping carried out by the author in the northern portion of the Sierras Pampeanas. The map-area, comprising approximately 4.130 square kilometers (quadrangle 11e, Santa Maria), includes parts of de ranges of the Sierra del Aconquija, Cumbres Calchaquies and Sierra del Cajon. The area is underlain by metamorphic and sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Precambrian to recent date. The oldest rock formations consist of a series of phyllites and migmatites with occasional limestone bodies intruded by granites and pegmatites. The Cretaceous and Terciary continental deposits are exposed between fracturated blocks in the eastern part of the Santa Maria Valley as well as in the eastern part of the quadrangle.
