Viability of the liberation of Red-Tailed Squirrel Sciurus Granatensis in the arboretum Francisco Bayón - Universidad Nacional de Colombia

The rescue centers of the city face a problem with the confiscated specimens because their number are growing as a result of the illegal traffic of fauna and therefore, it is necessary an alternative for their management. An option could be the release of a group of the red-tailed squirrel Sciurus granatensis at the Arboretum of the Universidad Nacional as part of research and education programs, to contribute to the resolution of this problem. To understand the viability of this project, the resources offered by the habitat were identified and evaluated, the documentation requested for fauna tenancy in the city and the perception of several people about this proposal were also evaluated. The Arboretum could provide the necessary resources to satisfy the requirements, for covering and refuge, but not for feeding. Finally, we found that the perceptions of people in relation with this project were influenced more by age more than profession.
